Hardwood Flooring Installation

Choosing to install or refinish a wood floor in your home or business is a big decision, and one that is affected by a variety of issues. We are familiar with the latest products, services and trends in our industry. We possess the knowledge, skills, and professionalism to help you make informed decisions, and deliver a high-quality job that will last for the lifetime of your home.

There are three ways hardwood flooring can be installed. These include nail down, glue down and floating. The type of installation will vary depending on where the product is being installed.

Types

Solid

Solid wood is milled from a single piece of hardwood, typically ¾” thick. Because of its thickness, a solid hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home’s relative humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall. Base molding or quarter round is traditionally used to cover the extra space. It can be installed on or above grade.

Engineered

Engineered wood floors are real wood floors that are manufactured using three to nine layers of different wood veneers. The sub layers can be of the same species, or of different species. The grain of each layer runs in different directions, which makes it very stable. This means that the wood will expand and contract less than solid wood flooring during fluctuations in humidity and temperature. The top layer of engineered wood flooring consists of high-quality wood. Some engineered floors have a top layer that can be refinished as many times as a solid wood floor. Many engineered wood floors can be installed above, on or below grade. Always follow manufacture guidelines.

Performance

(What to Expect from the Product)

With the proper maintenance and installation, hardwood flooring can last a lifetime.

If you are considering flooring for a bathroom where continuous moisture is expected, you will want to select a product other than hardwood. While the moisture resistance of an engineered hardwood makes it suitable for rooms below grade or ground level when installed with a moisture barrier, it is not advisable to install any hardwood flooring in a bathroom.

As your floor ages, some color change can occur. This also is normal, but can be minimized by limiting exposure to direct sunlight, and periodically moving furniture and rugs.

Seasonal humidity change may cause the wood to expand and contract. Keep the relative humidity in your home between 35 and 50%.

No two boards are identical. Variation in appearance from board to board is not a flaw, and in fact, adds to the character of the overall appearance of the wood.
